Survival of the fittest . . .

. . . or something like that. We survived our first Christmas as a separated couple and it was, interesting. Quite honestly, I'm not much of a Christmas person to begin with. All five of my sisters come into town with their S/O's and children in tow and it's complete chaos, noise, gossiping and fakeness. Do I love my sisters? I adore them to pieces (a few possibly even read my blog), but for me with small children it's just overwhelming and exhausting. My idea of a nice holiday is with my immediate family on a beach somewhere with room service. But yet, every year we do it and we continue to all get together insisting it's for the children.

Add to this that STBX came along and was part of the festivities in a hope for us to learn how to redo our 'family' in a way that we all were comfortable and the kids were happy. It worked, though clearly by monday afternoon my stress level was so high I had just had it and was ready to bury 2011 in a box and not look back.

Tuesday we had the appointment with the pediatric neurologist. DS has anxiety and sensory disorders paired with Aspergers. But he's high functioning and occupational therapy, one on one therapy and regular every other month appointments with the Ped Neuro has him confident that he will be leading a full and happy life. He let us know that unless we wanted to medicate DS there really is no magic sleep cure to get him to sleep, that often time little ones filled with so much anxiety and sensory issues cannot just shut it off at bedtime and wake up in panics because it starts all over again for them. He did reassure us that our co-sleeping, nursing and no CIO choices will only help him in the long run and it's a parenting lifestyle that he see's in his patients as a direct correlation to how well they weather their issues. So we will be adding these new activities to our lives.

On the home front, all is still calm and rolling along. It's amazing how drastically STBX'es and mine 'relationship' has changed. We don't always want to be friends but we still find ourselves being really respectful. STBX went off medication for about 2 weeks and I could tell the difference, he could too. Which was really good because he had thought maybe it was just a crutch for him and picked up his prescription today.

Next year we have decided that we are taking the kids to Disneyland for Christmas. Just us and the kids (no significant others if one of us is dating) and no family.
